Compiled from stock photography, archive material and recordings made by the film maker, this film essay weaves a dense web of references, associations and repetitions linking Papua New Guinea’s colonial past with the planned extraction of the rare earth metal europium from Bismarck Sea. Through historical contextualization and the underlying conventional logics of exploitation and profit generation, the work exposes smartphones, flat screens and money as fetishes of our age that are inhabited by the ever circulating spirit of violence, deceit, exploitation and dependency of a previous era.
